Small Everyday Pleasures Make a Big Difference

How effective are everyday stress management techniques in helping keep a person healthy? How strongly do everyday happy events affect you? One study indicates that a small pleasant everyday event boosts the immune system for two days, while a small, everyday stressful event depresses the immune system for about a day.

At Stonybrook University, Dr. Arthur Stone, a psychologist, conducted a research study with about 100 men. He measured the effects of fun get togethers with friends an family on the immune system. Dr, Stone found that the uplifting effects of a social gathering on Monday will last until Wednesday, But a stressful event, such as being criticized at work, will negatively affect the immune system for only a day.

Aromatherapy – DIY Soothing Cold Away Salve

Clinical Aromatherapy

One of my life long hobbies is studying healing plants in the form of herbals, essential oils and flower essences.  I studied for my aromatherapy certification in 2014 with Liz Fulcher at her Aromatic Wisdom Institute in Pennsylvania. It was a wonderful course and she mentored me further into the secret life of plants. I discovered a whole network of wise women working with plant secrets. It was a great experience.

Anyway, here’s a recipe for a soothing congestion salve to help open up stuffed nasal passages I made for a friend who has three little ones who often get sick all at once, passing it around to each other!

Valentine’s Day DIY Romantic Body Massage Oil

Banish those negative feelings! Nurturing your connection is important. It’s important to connect positively every day! Research by John Gottman, Ph.D.,  the grandaddy of  marriage counseling, shows that for every negative interaction, five positive ones are needed to compensate to keep up a positive balance of feelings.  Happy, stable marriages naturally fall into the 5:1 ratio. The good news is you can consciously make an effort to happily tease your partner, be interested in what s/he has to say, or spontaneously burst into song and dance in the living room!

Boost Your New Year Vision Energy with 5 Flower Essences

As you look at this picture, how do you feel when you look at its mix of colors and the idea of the softness of the plant petals and leaves? Numerous feelings about the beauty and sweetness of the plants and positivity of growth can be identified.  Flower essences connect with us on an energetic level; they have a different action than essential oils and herbals, which function more on a physical level; their molecular actions can be studied and measured in clinical studies.

But flower essences work on a vibrational level. Each flower essence has the vibrational pattern of the original plant. Flower essences are useful for shifting emotional states towards balance.  Flower essence practitioners believe there’s a flower essence for every feeling and mood.

Be Kind Whenever Possible. It is Always Possible. – Dalai Lama

7 Mental Health Tips to Avoid Holiday Stress

1. Be kind to yourself. Practice being non-judgmental about yourself. Be mindful of  your internal chatter; if it is negative, stop and think, Would I say this to/about a friend? And don’t say it about yourself. Counter negative thoughts with realistic reframing!  Change “I won’t get all of this done because I’m all alone!” which is multi-layered, packed with anxiety and then secondarily layered up with fears of being alone to “I can do a reasonable amount of things this holiday season.”

Mindfulness practices are skills that can be learned (Istock/awelo)

12 Ways I Use Flower Essences

Aromatherapists and herbalists use essential oils, herbs and flower essences. I’m a trained aromatherapist, but I have allergies, so I use flower essences instead of essential oils, which are quite potent. I am also very sensitive to energy modalities, so I respond to the emotional energy of flower essences.

Flower essences are subtle liquid extracts of wildflowers or organic garden flowers, diluted in water and infused in the sun. The extreme dilution produces a vibrational essence that carries the imprint of the flower or plant. The extremely diluted flower water is preserved in brandy.

Stop wasting vacation days! Vacation is good for self-care and mental health!

Billions of dollars in benefits are wasted every year as employees work through paid holidays and swap vacation days for a few more hours at the office. No wonder American workers say they’re stressed out and burnt out. But if work is so tiring and employers are offering a paid break, why is fewer than half the workforce taking advantage of it?
