One of my life long hobbies is studying healing plants in the form of herbals, essential oils and flower essences. As a hobbyist, in 1985, I took my first herbal studies class from the Australasian School of Herbal Studies. It has since evolved into a much larger entity. Now there are so many local courses to be taken with big names around the tri-state area, such as Robin Rose Bennet , Susan Weed and Peeka Trenkle. There just weren’t any local classes that I knew of in 1985. In 1986, I studied homeopathy with Jane Cicchetti at the Five Elements Center in Mountain Lakes.
I’m trying to protect my garden from becoming deer appetizers! A seasoned gardener in deer country, I’ve used many commercial preparations, including Deer Out and Liquid Fence and Deer Scram Repellent. I’ve found that all are effective, all take persistence in remembering to take the time to re-apply during the season, all are kinda hard on the pocketbook plus I always had to make sure I had some on hand!

Mindfulness is a positive psychology coping skill. When developed, mindfulness helps you let go of judgments, be in the present moment and feel less anxious and depressed about what may or may not happen.
Mindfulness doesn’t mean meditating 20 – 40 minutes a day. That’s a bigger commitment than most people I know are willing (or able!) to make! Mindfulness doesn’t need to be an overwhelming prospect! Even small changes can positively impact your internal emotional well-being and how you relate to external events!
Mindbody Research: Lavender Aromatherapy Provides Comfort and Increases Maternal Contentment in Childbirth
This year, 2014, Maasumeh Kaviani, Faculty Member at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran, and her team of research scholars conducted a study to see the effects of using lavender aromatherapy during childbirth on pain intensity perception, duration of labor, maternal contentment and Apgar scores. The researchers found the use of the lavender aromatherapy lowered the perception of pain, improved maternal contentment, but did not reduce the duration of labor. Safely using lavender aromatherapy in the birthing room is inexpensive, has no side effects and may be a holistic way to help women manage their births.
This is my creative arts workspace. 52 years ago, my mom, who is now 92, created this beautiful needlepoint cushion cover for her antique chair. I now use this chair when I work on my creative projects. Mom had this chair in her bedroom for many years before she created the cushion. I remember the chair when I was a small child. My mom was very creative. She did many quilts and needlepoints. I like to think I inherited my creativity and love of color and texture from her. My Dad was an opera singer, he was always singing in the house.
I met Ivy at Postpartum Support International’s Conference in 2011. She had such a nice feeling about her. Her accessibility, strength, humility and intelligence were quite strongly evident. Of course I had to kindle her book when it came out.
