Aromatherapy: Make Your Own Flower Essences

Think of flower essences as the Reiki of the plant world, as they work on the emotional and energetic levels of the body and mind. Flower essences are useful for people with highly sensitive nervous systems. Flower essences can also be thought of the homeopathy of the plant world. They were developed by a homeopath, Dr. Edward Bach. He believed many illnesses and ailments have emotional origins. Dr. Bach believed the health of the body depends on the health of the soul.

Herbal preparations come in different forms: fresh and dried herbs, tinctures, soups, teas, essential oils, hydrosols and flower essences. Essential oils are the most concentrated of the plant modalities, using a large amount of plants to create a small amount of concentrated plant oil. Because of the concentrated nature of essential oils, they must be used in dilution. I use them only in dilutions appropriate for sensitive people.

Hobby Corner: Fall Warming Salve for Pain Relief

This spring and summer, I wildcrafted some herbs to infuse in base oils for use in making some fall  and winter salves. I made comfrey, dandelion and calendula oils.  This November, I made my first fall/winter warming salve. Because, like any others,  I do intense work as a psychotherapist, I tend towards hobbies that being me in contact with nature, such as hiking, gardening and herbal and aromatherapy studies.

Weekend retreats are just great. Getting away from your responsibilities, the phone, the devices, the social whirlwind, is a nice reset for your body and mind. The relaxation response has time to fully express itself, the hormones wind down, the muscles change from rock to softness, your neck and shoulders relax.  Puts your life in perspective. All these things that seem so important, well….you realize you are ok and all of our modern trappings don’t make the person. Good for your body, mind and soul. You can create a nice DIY Wellness Retreat in your own home.  Some planning ahead helps you focus so that your weekend can be a haven where you are a human “being” in your home instead of a human “doing”.

Aromatherapy – DIY Soothing Cold Away Salve

One of my life long hobbies is studying healing plants in the form of herbals, essential oils and flower essences.  I studied for my aromatherapy certification in 2014 with Liz Fulcher at her Aromatic Wisdom Institute in Pennsylvania. It was a wonderful course and she mentored me further into the secret life of plants. I discovered a whole network of wise women working with plant secrets. It was a great experience.

Anyway, here’s a recipe for a soothing congestion salve to help open up stuffed nasal passages I made for a friend who has three little ones who often get sick all at once, passing it around to each other!

One of my life long hobbies is studying healing plants in the form of herbals, essential oils and flower essences.   As a hobbyist, in 1985, I took my first herbal studies class from the  Australasian School of Herbal Studies. It has since evolved into a much larger entity. Now there are so many local courses to be taken with big names around the tri-state area, such as Robin Rose Bennet ,  Susan Weed and Peeka Trenkle. There just weren’t any local classes that I knew of in 1985.  In 1986, I studied homeopathy with Jane Cicchetti at the Five Elements Center in Mountain Lakes.

I’m trying to protect my garden from becoming deer appetizers! A seasoned gardener in deer country, I’ve used many commercial preparations, including Deer Out and Liquid Fence and Deer Scram Repellent. I’ve found that all are effective, all take persistence in remembering to take the time to re-apply during the season, all are kinda hard on the pocketbook plus I always had to make sure I had some on hand!

Positive psychology coping skill: Mindfulness

 

Mindfulness is a positive psychology coping skill. When developed, mindfulness helps you let go of judgments, be in the present moment and feel less anxious and depressed about what may or may not happen.

Mindfulness doesn’t mean meditating 20 – 40 minutes a day. That’s a bigger commitment than most people I know are willing (or able!) to make! Mindfulness doesn’t need to be an overwhelming prospect! Even small changes can positively impact your internal emotional well-being and how you relate to external events!
