Lots of us get flustered during the busy holiday season.  And, if you’re already coping with a mental health challenges such as grief, depression, anxiety, PTSD or bipolar disorder, keeping up with healthy lifestyle choices will absolutely support your mental health.  When I started thinking about cooking for Thanksgiving, although I  love my family, I started to feel really irritable. I just really didn’t feel like doing all the shopping and cooking. I am involved in some writing projects and other work I’d really like to accomplish.  Ok. Weekend retreats are just great. Getting away from your responsibilities, the phone, the devices, the social whirlwind, is a nice reset for your body and mind. The relaxation response has time to fully express itself, the hormones wind down, the muscles change from rock to softness, your neck and shoulders relax.  Puts your life in perspective. All these things that seem so important, well….you realize you are ok and all of our modern trappings don’t make the person. Good for your body, mind and soul. Do you wish you could reset more often?   Yes, those weekend retreats are quite a commitment of time and money.

You can create a nice DIY Wellness Retreat in your own home.  Some planning ahead helps you focus so that your weekend can be a haven where you are a human “being” in your home instead of a human “doing”.

There is so much contention right now, let’s all cultivate the energy of Lovingkindness and send this out into the world in beautiful waves.

Mindfulness Everyday – Serenity Meditation

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, quiet your thoughts. Sometimes when you’re just beginning mindfulness practice, your mind isn’t used to being quiet. Your mind has lots of thoughts rushing in.  Just imagine them as waves moving about. Be gentle with yourself. It takes time to habituate  your mind to calmness, just as it takes time to build a muscle at the gym.

Imagine being in a peaceful place.  It could be a place you know or one from your wonderful imagination. Be aware of the sounds around you. Sounds can be distracting when we try to block them out, so acknowledge the sounds and be at peace with them. Visualize any cares or worries gently drifting away.
