Attachment Theory and Good Enough Parenting

Attachment theory is a complex, broad theory that encompasses human, primate and mammalian behavior. It’s a biologically based relationship defined and strengthened (either positively or negatively) by the quality and quantity of social interactions with the baby’s immediate family and social environment.

Maternal Mortality and Birth Trauma: A Call for Woman Centered Birth

In my work as a perinatal psychotherapist, I have had the honor of hearing many women’s oral histories about their childbirth. I often see women who have nearly died in childbirth, usually due to hemorrhaging.

Self-care: Affirmations, positive emotions and flower essences

Affirmations alone won’t enact change within yourself, but are a wonderful addition to insight psychotherapy to aid in your transformative process. Self-Care: Essential Oils for Emotional Support

Self-Care: Essential Oils for Emotional Support

Safety note: Please realize that self-treatment has its limitations. You must seek professional help for any chronic, lingering or severe emotional or psychological symptoms you are experiencing. The use of essential oils for emotional support is discussed here as just one piece of the pie in your healing, as complementary care only. In addition, this website promotes the safe use of essential oils by these methods only: inhalation, intermittent diffusing and safe levels of dilution in a carrier oil for use on the skin. This website does NOT promote the ingestion of essential oils.

Can essential oils be used for emotional support? Is there evidence to back these claims? There is a small, but growing, body of research indicating that essential oils have a positive effect on mood. And research has also focused on the psychophysiological effects of essential oils at the molecular level as well. The studies indicate that there are positive effects and better designed and additional studies are needed.

5 Mindbody Ways to take care of mental health during pregnancy

5 MindBody Ways to Care for Mental Health During Pregnancy

Be mindful of your mental health during pregnancy.  For many women, pregnancy is the most joyous times of their lives, but for some women it can be a time of increased anxiety and depression. If you have certain risk factors, such as a personal or family history of trauma, depression, anxiety or bipolar disease, you have an increased chance of  becoming depressed, anxious or having a manic episode in your perinatal time.

Stress during and after pregnancy increases the likelihood of depression or anxiety.  Mindfully taking care of yourself is just as important as your doctor visits and decorating the nursery!

Heartlife Holistic® Hobby Corner: Wildcrafting Dandelion Flowers

I wildcrafted dandelion flowers last week. I missed picking the dandelion flowers in my yard! I  kept meaning to pick them, but they all went to seed before I could get to them!

Dandelions have gotten a bad rap in modern times. How spraying  toxic chemicals onto greenery around your home where you and your family live, eat and play became a thing, I just don’t know. Chemical industry, anyone?  Makes my eyes red and itchy just thinking about it!

HeartLife Holistic® Healing: Infusing Carrier Oils for Self-Care

Herbals: Infusing Carrier Oils for Self-Care

One of my hobbies is aromatherapy. I see studying the plant world as an extension of my life-long gardening hobby. I studied at Liz Fulcher’s Aromatic Wisdom Institute, and had the best time learning about how to judge the quality of essential oils, how to mix them and all about carrier oils as well. I especially love infused carrier oils and salves. They have such nice scents and are so calming and have strong, grounding energy.

I myself use the plant world as part of self-care, as emotional balancing, whether it is practicing forest bathing by walking in the woods, spending a day working in my garden, going to a local arboretum to enjoy the professional naturalized plantings, bringing cut flowers in the house or using the grounding energy of the carrier oils and flower essences during stressful times.

Facing the reality of postpartum depression

Postpartum depression changed my life.

I let my postpartum depression go untreated for a long time after I gave birth and I shouldn’t have done that, I suffered needlessly and caused my husband to suffer needlessly. I did go to a therapist, who very kindly referred me to a female psychiatrist (over and over again!).But, I refused to go see this psychiatrist, as I was nursing my son. My nursing times with him were the best times of the day, it was soothing to relax, sit down, and just feel the love between us! And I did not want to expose him to any form of medication through my breastmilk, especially not daily antidepressants!

Back then, 17 years ago, there wasn’t much perer-reviewed research literature published regarding the risks and safety of different psychotropic medications for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Now,  you can easily access accurate, succinct, and professional consumer information about pregnancy, breastfeeding and psychotropic medications on the Mother to Baby website , which is a website run by teratogen specialists. There is a mountain of information, plus free, live counseling with a teratogen specialist,  that can help you make an informed decision with your doctor.

What are the Seven Chakras

What are the chakras? The word chakra literally means wheel or vortex (Eden, 1998). According to yogic tradition, the chakras are the energy centers in the body which and interconnect the body and spirit and the external world. The chakras are associated energetically with physical organ systems, the endocrine system and emotional states. The chakras pull in energy from the environment like a vortex and also release energy outward to encompass outer energies and draw them in (Eden, 1998).

We can balance our chakra energy in different ways.  The practice of yoga opens or clears the chakras which, in turn, facilitates self-growth and spiritual enlightenment. The practice of Reiki also clears and opens the chakras. Collette Baron-Reid has a beautiful, calming meditation called Journey Through the Chakras filled with imagery and color that clears and opens the chakras. I often fall asleep listening to it. Plus, color and sound frequencies influence the chakras. Each of the seven chakras has its own color vibration, and in addition, the seven notes of the C scale correspond to the seven chakras (Eden, 1998).
